One of the things I love about being a realtor in Georgetown is the opportunity to introduce people to the charms of outdoor living in Georgetown. A big part of the Georgetown, TX life is the quick and easy access to so many great outdoor spaces. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but the Good Water Loop, a 28 mile loop that encircles beautiful Lake Georgetown and is part of the San Gabriel River Trail System, is definitely at the top of my list. This trail has gained accolades from many outdoor and sporting enthusiasts including an ‘epic’ rating from the International Mountain Bicycling Association, and a top 15 rank for best trails in Texas from National Geographic’s All Trails. And Lake Georgetown is not a long ways off. It's about a ten minute drive from Route 29 in Georgetown and there are many homes for sale in Georgetown within 15-20 minutes of Lake Georgetown and the Good Water Loop. It's one of the treasures of Georgetown and excursions there for biking and hiking are a regular event for many homeowners here.
What Makes this Georgetown Trail So Special?
Ok, so I've shared with you the accolades and awards. But what about the trail earns these honors? Why is the Goodwater Loop so special?
1. Available for multiple recreational and sporting activities: you can walk it, hike it, camp it, run it, bike it! Take your pet if you like as the whole trail is pet-friendly. The entire trail could be done in a day – but why rush? Choose from a variety of camp sites and stay the night in the beautiful woods near the lake.

2. Natural beauty abounds on this trail. The terrain of the trail varies greatly so you are never bored. One minute you are walking through live oaks, junipers, and cedar groves, the next minute you are in a rock garden, then up and over a hill to find yourself in tall prairie grass and cactus. On the West side of I35, the lake is on the edge of the Texas Hill Country, so you can count on limestone and karst rock outcroppings to add to the natural beauty of the place.
3. Exciting wildlife is just around every corner on the Good Water Loop. Of course white tail deer are in abundance as well as other small woodland creatures such as squirrels, raccoons, opossums, owls, etc. but these fury friends can only be spotted at dawn and twilight hours. A little known fact about Lake Georgetown is that it is a nesting site for two endangered species: the golden-cheeked warbler and the black capped vireo. Both of these rare birds nest around the trail from February through August – bring your binoculars and keep your eyes peeled!

4. The trail provides you with access to the lake that feels private. Jump in and have a swim – you’ll feel like the only one there! Lake Georgetown has clear, cool, deep water. Bring your fishing pole and do a little fishing, throw a ball for your dog to splash in and catch, or cool off from the Texas heat as the refreshing lake water gently laps over your toes.
The whole trail is great – but my favorite section? I usually get on at the Cedar Breaks trailhead and hike to Crocket Gardens, a beautiful spot especially in spring when dozens and dozens of flowers bloom. On the way back, just past mile marker one, my dog and I will stop for a quick dip in the lake to cool off and have some fun! Don’t forget your water, some sunscreen, and a pair of good shoes.
The Good Water Loop is one of the many beautiful amenities available to those living The Georgetown Life and it's one of the features that makes Georgetown real estate unique and valuable. If you're considering purchasing a home in Georgetown, I look forward to showing you all of the things that make our city truly distinct. I hope to see you on the trail!
